make your clothes

It is trivially easy to acquire manufactured clothes for very little money. It is very much not an efficient use of time to make your own clothes from a time-and-money perspective.

However, if you love making clothes, and find satisfaction from the creative expression and pure craft of the thing, then making your own clothes can be a wonderful thing to do.

I just finished making my first article of clothing – a pair of climbing pants. It was an extremely rewarding process. I got some high-quality cotton in a color I love, tweaked the fit and the waistband to exactly the shape I wanted, and added some custom pockets of my own (for snacks of course). It took about 10 hours or so from roll of fabric to finished pants, after a prototype test run (always recommended). I learned a ton, enjoyed the process a lot, and made a pair of pants for $25 that might retail for >$100. While certainly it might not be the MOST efficient use of time/money, it’s also something I can be proud of and will cherish for years to come.
