live in your rig

aka rubber tramping

Don’t have a permanent address and live in your car, van, trailer, bus, etc.

This is one of the greyest forms of outlaw shelter because there’s nothing illegal about it.

However, there is no checkbox on IRS forms or DMV residency forms for “I don’t have an address.” You can’t tell your bank that you don’t actually live anywhere in particular. So you’ve got to lie.

For most situations this isn’t a big hassle. You just use a friends address. In some states you can get a drivers license with a RVpark or campground receipt for 30 days.

Fortunately, if you apply pattern spend the GEBR, the IRS will not care because you’re not valuable enough to them for them to care (no taxable income).

Standard options:

  • Convert a van
  • Convert a cargo trailer
  • Convert a car/Prius/etc
  • Put a rooftop tent on your vehicle
  • Have a stock normal car and sleep in a tent
