live in a tiny house

Action

Live in a tiny house that you either built, bought, or rent.

Discussion

A tiny house is generally considered to be around 400 square feet (38 square meters), although the range of area of tiny houses that people live in is quite large.

Regardless of whether you build, buy, or rent, the overall cost of shelter tends to be roughly proportional to floor area. All other variables being equal (cost of materials, location, climate, owner-built vs paid-labor, etc), you will pay less to acquire shelter that is smaller than alternatives.

There are secondary benefits to living in a tiny house than just cost/rent:

  • Less space = less ability to store stuff > less likely to buy stuff just to fill up the space.
  • Smaller volume to heat or cool > lower cost to heat or cool your space.
  • Spend less time cleaning, decluttering, and on maintenence.
  • You tend to spend more time outside, even if only reading or hanging out on your deck.
  • If your tiny house is on a trailer its easier for you to move.
  • You have more options for housing creativity, such as renting space on someone’s side yard, ranch, or farm (legally or outlaw shelter).
