a very low cost of living is magic

The Issue

Spending money requires earning money, which requires exchanging labor in a job of some sort.

  • It is difficult to find a job that is neither bullshit, toxic to our dignity, or without negative externalities.
  • Much of what we spend money on is a futile attempt to satiate desires manufactured by advertising, resulting only in pollution, wasted resources, and ennui.
  • Attempting to align paid work with one’s purpose and meaning in life is very difficult because (among other reasons) intrinsic motivation is eroded by external rewards.
  • Consumer spending is tightly correlated to energy and materials use, and rich countries spend an inequitable amount of resources.

The Response

Aim to spend very little money while maintaining or increasing your subjective quality of life. The less money you spend, the less time you need to spend earning money, the more time you have available to pursue your life as an autonomous human, the easier it is to find activities that will generate the income you need to live, the more free you are to pursue meaningful/purposeful activity, the less you contribute to pollution, climate change, resource overuse, and inequitable consumption patterns.

Discussion

A very low cost of living is magic. Below certain thresholds, there is a qualitative difference in available options. It becomes much, much easier to earn enough to live comfortably once you’ve internalized the skills necessary to live comfortably at a very low cost of living.

An implication of a very low annual cost of living is that one’s overall lifetime cost of living is very low as well. If your annual income is significantly higher than your annual cost of living, then you might be able to earn all of the money you’ll ever need in a relatively short amount of time (5-10 years) and then stop income earning. Alternatively, you can reduce the number of hours you work and experience much more free time immediately.

  • You can attain economic independence faster
  • There are many more options available to earn required income
  • The total lifetime amount of time/effort you need to devote to getting your basic needs met are lower
  • You make less of a target
  • You have less to lose (because you could get it all back quickly)
